Evaluations

You may have concerns over your child’s development in some or all areas of speech, language, and literacy. Our evaluation will target all areas in which there is a potential concern.

Speech skills refer to the physical production of sounds and language. Some areas of speech that we can target are:

  • Articulation/Phonology The pronunciation of sounds in words. A child will pronounce sounds unclearly and be difficult to understand.
  • Fluency A child who has hesitation or becomes physically stuck while speaking may have a condition called stuttering.
  • Voice – The quality of a child’s voice can be limited by poor vocal habits or by injuries/medical conditions
  • Apraxia The ability to plan how words will be pronounced and monitor that the sounds are pronounced accurately and in the right sequence.

Language development can be evaluated in these areas:

  • Receptive Language – Understanding language
  • Expressive Language – Using language
  • Vocabulary – Knowledge of word meaning
  • Grammar, Syntax, Semantics – The structure and meaning of sentences

  • Working Memory – Holding and working with information in mind
  • Listening Comprehension
  • Social Pragmatics – Understanding and using non-verbal communication
  • Metacognition – Analysis of language; self-awareness and insight

Literacy can be targeted through these skills:

  • Understanding of Sounds – Phonological processing
  • Decoding – Sounding out words and word attack skills
  • Automaticity – Automatic recall of familiar words
  • Reading Fluency – The ability to read accurately with expression and phrasing
