You may have concerns over your child’s development in some or all areas of speech, language, and literacy. Our evaluation will target all areas in which there is a potential concern.
Speech skills refer to the physical production of sounds and language. Some areas of speech that we can target are:
- Articulation/Phonology – The pronunciation of sounds in words. A child will pronounce sounds unclearly and be difficult to understand.
- Fluency – A child who has hesitation or becomes physically stuck while speaking may have a condition called stuttering.
- Voice – The quality of a child’s voice can be limited by poor vocal habits or by injuries/medical conditions
- Apraxia – The ability to plan how words will be pronounced and monitor that the sounds are pronounced accurately and in the right sequence.
Language development can be evaluated in these areas:
- Receptive Language – Understanding language
- Expressive Language – Using language
- Vocabulary – Knowledge of word meaning
- Grammar, Syntax, Semantics – The structure and meaning of sentences
- Word Retrieval – Recalling the names of familiar words (word finding)
- Working Memory – Holding and working with information in mind
- Listening Comprehension
- Social Pragmatics – Understanding and using non-verbal communication
- Metacognition – Analysis of language; self-awareness and insight
Literacy can be targeted through these skills:
- Understanding of Sounds – Phonological processing
- Decoding – Sounding out words and word attack skills
- Automaticity – Automatic recall of familiar words
- Reading Fluency – The ability to read accurately with expression and phrasing
- Reading Comprehension – Understanding what is read
- Spelling
- Writing – The ability to write in a meaningful and accurate way
